The idea for the  World Science Day for Peace and Development , emerged from the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest, co-organized by the long-standing partners UNESCO and ISC’s predecessor the International Council for Science (ICSU) with the aim of reinforcing the commitments set out in the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge . UNESCO officially proclaimed the Day in 2001. Since then, it has catalyzed global initiatives, programmes, and funding to strengthen science as a cornerstone of progress.
